Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr Review

Wow, I feel so bad everyone! My heart hasn't been in my books in the last couple of weeks...unfortunately.

Here's my problem...The List!! Yes the DAMN LIST!!!! I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!

Over the past couple of months, I've been getting an insane amount of emails from authors, requesting me to read their latest novel...which you know is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! Authors want ME to read their novels???!!!

But here's the problem...I ended up promising too many authors that I would read their books by a specific time, and have the review up by a such and such date.  It's gotten too much!

Over the past couple of months the fun of reading has almost been taken away from me...something that I have a serious problem with!

Here's the thing though...and I don't want anyone thinking I don't love getting author requests...I DO!!!, it's just reading is supposed to fun! Not scheduled! I now realize it is my own mistake, I should have gone a different way with each of the requests...and luckily, between May 15th and July 21st, when Meg-A Readers Blog Hop! takes place, I will be having a reading break...not to stop reading or anything...but a reading vacation of reading some books I've been wanting to reread for quite some time!

Well anyway, to make a long story short...I need a break...from reading books off of the list...I need some contemporary in my life again...so that's what will probably be showing up here soon :).

So now to my latest review...

So I've been reading Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr, over the past few days.  Before I explain my thoughts on it, I'm going to give you the Amazon summary (because Goodreads doesn't give you an idea of what the story is about at all!!), because to be honest...I don't even know I understood this book...

From Amazon :

Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow.
Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life.
The tattoo does bring changes—not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .

 So my thoughts...
Lets see...where to begin...
First off, I am just going to come straight out and say it...I was disappointed.  I think partially it's my mistake though...because I guess Ink Exchange isn't a real sequel to Wicked Lovely, it's more a continuation of Melissa's Faery world, with some of the same characters, but more behind the new ones.  Something I didn't know, because Goodreads said it was the sequel.
I went into reading this book, excited to read more about Seth and Aislinn.  BUT NO!!

This was pretty much a completely different story!!

I didn't like the main character, Leslie...I think partially because she allowed people to manipulate her...which I KNOW isn't her fault, but it just bothered me for some reason!  And then I felt this story was very metaphorical to someone in an abusive, both physically and mentally, relationship.  Leslie, in my opinion was abused mentally by Irial.  Which is something I absolutely hate reading about.  I've had friends in abusive relationships, friends I've lost, because they couldn't see what was wrong with their relationship, they kept hoping their partner would change...I hated not being able to help them, but their was nothing I could do.

Leslie's had a tough life, and I felt so extremely terrible for her, but overall, I couldn't get into this book.  I don't even know if I completely understood this novel, to be honest.  The only character I did like was Niall, who is Leslie's love interest at first...but she ended up changing her mind, and then ended up not being able to make up her mind!! UGH!! It bothered me so much!

However, this book has gotten some great reviews through Goodreads, so many people obviously liked it...I didn't personally, but that absolutely does not mean you wouldn't.

If you've read this book, I would love to get your opinion on it, because who knows, maybe I missed something as I was making my way through it??

  1. Hmm, I honestly don't know how I'd feel about this one. I hate abusive relationship in YA probably one of my biggest pet peeves, but I am curious about this book. I think I read somewhere that the characters of Wicked Lovely make another appearance in either the third or fourth book as the main characters so you might want to continue with it-shrugs.

    1. YES!! Me too! Probably because I hate to admit but I don't have very much tolerance for women who stick around in those types of relationships...but then again, I wouldn't know personally I guess, so I probably shouldn't be saying anything.

But yes, I already got the third, because it has Aislinn and Seth in it again!!! YAY!! :)
