Week 3 Recap PLUS Avalon High Review & (!!!) GIVEAWAY!!!

Hey Everyone!!
So week 3 has come and gone!! Time is seriously flying!!

This week I've got a new review:

So last week I was going through Netflix, which I'm TOTALLY hooked on btw!!!, and I saw a title that I hadn't seen since its release.

Now before I tell you what the title is, let me just first explain I have an (almost) eleven year old brother who still likes to watch Disney Channel once in a while! That's the excuse I like to use anyway... ;).

But nah, I actually don't really watch DC anymore, because it just hasn't been the same in a long time.  I miss my Lizzie McGuire on Friday nights, Kim Possible, Even Stevens, Sister, Sister, and so many others.  Now the only thing that seems to be on is a bunch of fake stories that no normal teenager goes through, like being a teenage witch in training (and it's NOTHING like Sabrina The Teenage Witch!! At least that show dealt with real life things too!!), and other spoiled brats.

But ANYWAY enough of my rant about the current Disney Channel...

The movie I mentioned, is...Avalon High, which some of you may have known, or not, is based on the novel by Meg Cabot.

The movie is actually an almost decent movie for the DC, definitely not amazing or anything, but definitely watchable.  The first 1/3 of the movie was actually pretty good, but then after that it went just a little down hill...but like I said, it is definitely a cute movie for the little ones.

Now enough of the movie (which is similar to Avalon High (the book), but also SOOOOOO different!!!).  Let's get to the book!

For a description, here is the one Goodreads:
To newcomer Ellie, Avalon High seems like a typical American high school, complete with jocks, nerds, cheerleaders, and even the obligatory senior class president, quarterback, and all-around good guy. But it doesn't take Ellie long to suspect that something weird is going on beneath the glossy surface of this tranquil hall of learning. As she pieces together the meaning of this unfolding drama, she begins to recognize some haunting Arthurian echoes, causing her to worry that she has become just a pawn in mythic history.

Ellie has the same charm and spunk as Meg's other characters.  That is 100% my favorite thing about reading one of Meg's books.  She has the most awesome main characters!  Ellie's strong, brave, and really not afraid to be her own person, while at the same time still has the same insecurities as any other teenage girl has.
Will, Ellie's love interest, in the story is absolutely dreamy.  Mr. Perfect I would say.  He's someone who actually thinks outside of the box, is liked by everyone, is nice to everyone, no matter your "status" in high school; and just an all around good person...Quarterback of the football team and Senior Class President.

I thought the idea of a modernized King Arthur tale is pretty cool! I'd never heard the actual story, except from Disney's Sword in the Stone, which now that I think about it, was probably not the most historically accurate story of Arthur...

Anyway, I love retellings that are modernized; because for one, it allows me to actually understand a story that is centuries old (!!!), and second because I find it more interesting when a story is put into a point of view of idea that is relate able to today's times.

Overall rating:

If you like retellings, that are fun easy reads, this is the book for you!  This is a young adult novel, so it does have younger characters; you may want to keep that in mind.  I'd recommend it to readers between the ages of 13 to 16, however, I'm 21 (almost!!), and thoroughly enjoyed it, so you may too! :)

And to continue Meg-A Readers I want to giveaway a SIGNED copy of Avalon High to one lucky reader!! (A HUGE thanks to Meg, herself, for donating it to The Romance Bookie in honor of Meg-A Readers!)

  2. There was a retelling by a horror story writer I like (and I don't normally like horror stories), where they were all Salem Witch descendants - that one was pretty cool.

And did you know that Lizzie McGuire HAS A BABY NOW?! (aka Hilary Duff) and is married. Makes me feel old!

  3. My favorite retelling would be Everneath but it is more of a play on the story of Hades and Persephone!

  4. You are so right about DC! It seems like one giant Disney commercial now. I so miss watching Sister Sister and Kim Possible with my stepdaughter. hehehe!
